Frequently Asked Questions About Weight Descent
Rules and guidelines under the NFHS Wrestling Rules Committee.
How is Minimum Wrestling Weight (MWW) calculated under NFHS rules?
Under NFHS Rule 1-5-2 (2026-27 rules interpretations), the minimum body fat is 7% for boys and 19% for girls. A wrestler below that minimum can still compete only with a medical release signed by an appropriate health-care professional. Minimum Wrestling Weight is calculated as: Lean Body Mass / (1 - Minimum Body Fat %). Without a medical release, an athlete should not compete in a weight class below their certified MWW.
What is the NFHS 1.5% weekly weight descent rule?
Under NFHS weight management rules, a wrestler is permitted to lose no more than 1.5% of their initial alpha assessment weight per week. This prevents dangerous rapid dehydration and enforces safe, gradual body weight descent over the course of the season.
Can a wrestler drop down two weight classes in one week?
No. The athlete can only compete in weight classes that are at or above their allowable weight on the date of weigh-in according to their official 1.5% weekly descent schedule. Violating this leads to disqualification and forfeiture.
Does MatTime calculate weight descent automatically for entire rosters?
Yes. In MatTime Coach Pro, coaches can import their TrackWrestling, FloWrestling, or NWCA Alpha CSV. MatTime automatically maps all athlete skinfold measurements, calculates weekly descent curves, and warns coaches of non-compliant lineup attempts before match day.
